Imagery Workshop

May 14-15, 2025 | Vienna

Join us for this two-day workshop and boost your Imagery in ArcGIS knowledge.

Two days of imagery deep-dive.

SynerGIS and Esri are hosting a two-day imagery workshop.

Join top-class Esri experts Günter Dörffel (Technology Evangelist Imagery & Raster Analytics, Europe) and Alberto Meroni (Business Development Manager, Europe) and get a holistic overview of data management and image analysis with ArcGIS.

Aim of the workshop

The Esri Imagery stack and the imagery market have massively evolved over time. The goal of the workshop is to update you, to guide you, and to enable you to better address your imagery needs.

Participants

This workshop is suitable for Tech Leads, Solution Engineers or Professional Services Consultants. Participants should be able to recognize and describe the company's needs for imagery, but do not need to be imagery experts.

Agenda

Browse through the individual sessions and get an overview of the topics covered.

Arrive at the SynerGIS office, and meet the other participants.

Introductory Session is to set the field, expectations, and basics.

  • ArcGIS Image System overview
  • Imagery basics of relevance (Formats, Raster Type vs. Image file, Compression, Storage, …)
  • Ready to use Imagery (Living Atlas, Planetary Computer, STAC and others)
  • Imagery data models: Mosaic, Raster Collection, Oriented Imagery, Catalog Dataset, …

Cover the important data model details including the Raster Function concept. This is a key block for data management and has proven to be VERY valuable, as many customers merely scratch the surface of capabilities or use the system at its best.

  • Mosaic Dataset fundamentals and use cases
  • Capabilities and Properties “under the hood”
  • The concept of Raster Functions in a Mosaic – on the “input” and the “output” side
  • Automation and customization
  • Cloud & Publishing considerations

This session is divided into two parts.

Continuation of the morning session.

Cover the important data model details including the Raster Function concept. This is a key block for data management and has proven to be VERY valuable, as many customers merely scratch the surface of capabilities or use the system at its best.

  • Mosaic Dataset fundamentals and use cases
  • Capabilities and Properties “under the hood”
  • The concept of Raster Functions in a Mosaic – on the “input” and the “output” side
  • Automation and customization
  • Cloud & Publishing considerations

To prepare for time aware analysis, the concepts behind it are important to understand.

  • Sources and use of available Multidimensional data
  • Creation of self-defined Multidimensional data structures
  • Optimized performance and interactive use – via transposed CRF

A comprehensive comparison of the Imagery Infrastructure models that can be used/combined.

• (Self-managed) Enterprise architecture on-premises or in the cloud

• ArcGIS Online offerings

  • Drone/Aerial/SAT processing options
  • Ortho Workflows with Pro/Reality
  • Historical (scanned) data
  • Automation

“Analysis ready data” has become an industry term – for good reason!

  • Digital Number, Radiance, Reflectance, Linear, dB and more
  • Vector-Raster and their interaction for analysis in ArcGIS
  • The role of the Mosaic Dataset in data preparation
  • STAC, local data, services, cloud – and using the Living Atlas

This session consists of two modules.

1. Analytical capabilities with / for Elevation data

Often Exposition, Slope, Solar Radiation are inputs to other models …

  • Elevation sources (Services, LIDAR, DEM/DSM) and how to combine
  • A special emphasis on the rich set of Elevation Raster Functions
  • ArcGIS Toolsets relevant for Elevation data processing

2. Analysis of Time Series

Time series analysis replaces traditional single scene analysis in many domains …

  • Building time-series datasets – several options
  • Change detection, thematic, pixel-based analysis
  • Ready-to-use tools for analyzing time series

In many of the sections mentioned above, AI/Deep Learning plays a major role today …

  • Prepare, find the right model, define a strategy
  • Labelling training data
  • Train a deep learning model
  • Apply Inferencing
  • Postprocessing

Let’s go through all Desktop/Web/App options and see what they offer in terms of Analytics.
